Overview
GitMCP is a free, open-source remote MCP server that transforms any GitHub project (repositories or GitHub pages) into a documentation hub. It enables AI tools like Cursor to access up-to-date documentation and code, even if the LLM has never encountered them, thereby eliminating code hallucinations. GitMCP supports two flavors: a Specific Repository flavor (gitmcp.io/{owner}/{repo} or {owner}.gitmcp.io/{repo}) for targeting a small set of libraries, and a Generic Server flavor (gitmcp.io/docs) for flexible, on-demand access to any repository. With GitMCP, AI assistants get the latest docs directly from the source, providing accurate API usage and reliable code examples, and it helps when working with niche or rapidly changing libraries. It prioritizes the llms.txt documentation when present and gracefully falls back to README.md or other pages. It runs in the cloud with zero setup; you simply add the MCP URL to your IDE. Because it is open-source, it can also be self-hosted, and GitMCP emphasizes privacy by not collecting personal data or queries.
